News: Getting Kids to Love Cooking

One problem area for parents is how to get picky eaters interested in food. And for parents who have so much to do in these busy times, it can be quite a challenge getting their young ones to like food. A fun, effective way to do this is to introduce them to the wonderful world of cooking.

Kids ages 7-11 learned to prepare desserts and pancakes, and the importance of cleanliness and camaraderie at the recent Kids Kitchen Camp organized by The San Miguel Pure Foods Culinary Center in Pasig City.

At the camp, children experienced whipping up simple recipes and got to sample the food they prepared. They made pancakes, blended ingredients, scooped ice cream, operated kitchen gadgets, and interacted with other young participants.

It was a proud moment for SMPFCC team and the kids themselves when contest winners were announced. Best in Animalandia Creation went to Group 5 which put together the Purefoods Dino Buddies Jurassic Kingdom. The same group won the “I Love My Magnolia Ice Cream With…” activity with their yummy entry: Magnolia ice cream topped with marshmallows, candy sprinkles, cherries, and choco sticks -- a premium dessert like those served in restaurants but made by kids learning to cook!

Top KKC chefs were chosen at the end of the camp. RB Reyes and Miyyo Manglicmot was proclaimed 2007 KKC Little Ms. and Mr. Chef respectively.
The next summer kiddie event pushed the fun factor even higher when San Miguel Pure Foods Culinary Center partnered with Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdog and the Enchanted Kingdom. Some 24 kiddie chefs ages 7-11 gathered at the Launch Time Resto at the Enchanted Kingdom for the very first Tender Juicy Hotdog Junior Chefs Festival Cooking Workshop.

Wearing exclusive chef’s toque and garb, boys and girls learned basic culinary techniques through hands-on-training under Chef Maricel Manalo of the Culinary Center. Kids learned the many different ways to enjoy their favorite TJ Hotdog: as a sandwich filling, pizza topping, lasagna topping, and mixed in rice jambalaya.

The event, which is only the initial salvo of a series of Junior Chefs Festival to be held in schools and malls around the country, culminated in the awarding of the team that best exhibited creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination.

Through cooking, kids will develop self-confidence by appreciating the learning process, valuing cleanliness, teamwork, responsibility, and obedience, and letting loose their imagination.
